September 11, 2024Take This Survey on Sharks and Fishing
Have you ever been reeling in a fish off the coast only to have a shark come take a big chomp out of it?
If so, researchers want to know.
A team from the University of Massachusetts Amherst is conducting a survey on depredation, which is when a predator partially or wholly consumes an angler’s catch before it is landed.
The researchers are asking saltwater anglers from Maine to North Carolina to complete a survey so they can better understand shark depredation and how it is impacting anglers in the region.
The survey is being conducted by the Danylchuk Lab at UMass Amherst, which works to understand the factors that naturally influence the ecology of fishes and other aquatic organisms, as well as how natural and anthropogenic disturbances can influence the dynamics of their populations.
Anglers who complete the survey will be entered into a raffle to win a Patagonia Guidewater Backpack.
The survey will be available to anglers through the end of October 2024.
