October 8, 2024Maine to Host Pumpkin Regatta
Maine has a long, storied history of boatbuilding. But perhaps some of the state’s most clever, creative boatbuilding will take place this weekend as some folks build seaworthy boats out of … pumpkins.
The Damariscotta Pumpkinfest and Regatta will take place in Damariscotta, Maine from Friday, October 11 through Monday, October 14. A highlight of the annual event is the Pumpkinboat Regatta.
Participants hollow out their giant pumpkins and shape them into boats at the event throughout the weekend. The event culminates on Monday when regatta participants—many wearing wild costumes—slip into their pumpkins and paddle or motor along the Damariscotta River in front of thousands of spectators.
It may look funny, but creating a seaworthy pumpkinboat is no easy feat. Many of the pumpkinboat pilots have years of experience at the event and know how to keep their boats upright and in race trim. Failure to do so can result in their giant pumpkins filling up with frigid river water.
While the regatta is the weekend’s culminating event, it is only one part of the massive festival celebrating everyone’s favorite gourd. Pumpkinfest also features a parade, a pie-eating contest, a pumpkin derby, pumpkin art, and a pumpkin drop in which giant pumpkins are hoisted high on a crane and dropped into small pools or even onto donated cars.
