October 16, 2024Nav Light Tower to be Removed in Harwich Port, MA
The Coast Guard will remove a 20-foot-tall timber structure that has held the navigational light marking the east jetty at Saquatucket Harbor in Harwich Port, MA, for more than 50 years. The structure has been deemed obsolete after a new light was installed on the east jetty last spring.
The removal process will create approximately 110 square feet of disturbance to the ocean bottom, requiring the installation of a turbidity curtain to reduce the impact on local shellfish.
No word on when the tower-removal project will begin, but the work is required to be done when cormorants will not be nesting on the tower, which means sometime between late July and March.
