Coast Guard Rescues Person In Water Off Cape Cod
Coast Guard crews braved stormy conditions to rescue a person in the water off Woods Hole, Massachusetts on Monday while a nor’easter slammed the region.
Crew members on the ferry Island Home reportedly spotted a person in the water near Juniper Point in Woods Hole at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, October 13.
They attempted to help the individual by deploying life rings, but lost sight of them when they turned around to help. Stormy seas and poor visibility hampered efforts. Crew members on the ferry then contacted the harbormaster’s office and the Coast Guard for assistance.
Marine units from Falmouth Fire Rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Massachusetts Environmental Police were dispatched to begin a coordinated search operation. A Coast Guard helicopter was also requested and deployed to the scene.
At approximately 4:25 p.m., the helicopter crew located the person in the water off Nobska Point and successfully deployed a rescue swimmer to retrieve them. The victim was then hoisted aboard the helicopter.
Following the rescue, the helicopter transported the victim to Joint Base Cape Cod, where Emergency Medical Services were standing by. The victim was transferred to Falmouth Hospital for evaluation and observation. The person’s condition was not considered life-threatening.
According to Coast Guard officials, the individual had fallen off another ferry earlier in the afternoon.
