Corinthian Yacht Club Wins Sailing Championship
Boston is often called “The City of Champions.” But, a few miles north, the town of Marblehead might be pushing to be known as “The Town of Champions,” at least in the sailing world.
Sailors from the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead, Massachusetts, recently overcame challenging sailing conditions to win the 2025 Team Racing World Championship.
The event was hosted by the New York Yacht Club at Harbour Court in Newport, Rhode Island from May 28 to June 1.
The race featured 12 teams of sailors from around the world, including teams from Argentina, Italy, Sweden, Great Britain, and New Zealand. Competitors sailed in 23-foot Sonar keelboats in a two-on-two format. Sailors battled through sustained winds in the low 20-knot range and choppy seas during the four-day event.
The sailors from the Corinthian Yacht Club didn’t just win. They put on a dominant performance, leading from the first day and only losing five of the 25 races they sailed throughout the competition.
This was the first Team Racing World Championship to be held in a decade. Following the announcement of the event 18 months ago, the Corinthian Yacht Club team said they set a goal to be as well-prepared as possible for the regatta.
Corinthian Yacht Club skippers Will Bailey and Tim Wadlow — who won the Team Racing World Championship in 2005 — raced events including the Global Team Race Regatta and the Baldwin Cup, and put in many practice weekends over the past few months.
“Conditions were really challenging, and there were a lot of good teams out there,” said Bailey. “It was important to be consistent throughout the event. We started really well and tried not to lose back-to-back races, and I think that was the difference. It was total combat out there; we had a lot of good races with the home team, New York Yacht Club. We know each other well, and every race was a fistfight to the end.”
