Hiking Camden’s
Welcome to Hiking Camden’s Mt. Battie
The summit of Mt. Battie provides great views
of Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay.
THE NEXT TIME YOU’RE IN CAMDEN, MAINE, AND FEEL THE NEED FOR A LITTLE EXERCISE, TAKE A HIKE UP MOUNT BATTIE, IN CAMDEN HILLS STATE PARK, JUST A SHORT WALK FROM THE HARBOR.
To reach the main trailhead, walk north up Main Street /Rte. 1 through town, hang a left on Mountain Street/Rte. 52, then turn right on Megunticook Street. Follow the street to the parking area and trailhead at its end. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the harbor. A second trailhead can be found about a half-mile farther west on Rte. 52, on the right. To download a trailmap: Maine Parks Information (PDF .
The first trail is rather steep in places, but short, and suitable for children age 4 and above. Most reasonably fit hikers will make it to the summit (780’) in about an hour.
The second trail is less steep, and was easily tackled by my 3-year-old daughter last summer. Again, it takes about an hour to reach the summit.
At the top you’ll find an exposed granite ledge that offers unobstructed views of Penobscot Bay (barring any fog, of course). On a clear day, you can see Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park.
Restrooms and an observation tower are also located at the summit.
