Nantucket Bluefish Tournament Begins August 1
Having the blues this August could make you very happy … at least on Nantucket.
The island is hosting the third annual August Blues, a month-long Bluefish tournament beginning August 1 that raises money for a great cause.
While the tournament takes place in August, it gets its name from a young resident of the island named August who lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.
Despite the challenges presented by this condition, tournament organizers say August exhibits a spirit that is nothing short of inspiring, blazing a trail on the island’s bike paths in his power chair, hanging with his pals at the local car wash, volunteering at Nantucket High School, and advocating for all people with disabilities as a member of the Commission on Disability.
All proceeds from the tournament are donated to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, an organization dedicated to ending Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Everyone who registers is eligible to win a prize in one of several categories.
Additionally, anyone who registers for the month-long August Blues Tournament is automatically entered into Derby Day, a one-day fishing tournament on the island on August 23.
All catches during the derby will be eligible for any of the August Blues Tournament Prizes. The derby will award separate prizes for the first and last bluefish caught, the longest bluefish (Brufish), shortest bluefish, and the most number of bluefish caught by an individual during the derby.
