New PFD Age Law Takes Effect In Maine

When in Maine make sure the little ones wear a PFD. Photo/Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Children 12 years of age or younger are now required to wear a PFD while boating in Maine.
Previously, Maine had required children ages 10 and younger to wear a personal floatation device while on any watercraft that is underway and being used for recreation. The new rule increasing that age to 12 years and younger took effect on January 1, 2026.
Exceptions to this requirement include if the child is below the decks, in an enclosed cabin, or if the watercraft has a USCG certificate of inspection.
The updated age requirement now aligns with federal law.
Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife officials encourage everyone aboard a watercraft to always wear a life jacket. Additional laws regarding PFD requirements can be found in the department’s guide to Maine boating laws.
