Sailboat Stolen from South Portland Marina
A 53-foot sailboat was stolen from a marina in South Portland, Maine, on Sunday morning, Jan. 12, and recovered that same day when its owner spotted it heading north through Casco Bay.
Mark Reardon, 33, was alerted via his vessel-monitoring system that his boat’s power had turned off, so he drove to the Fore Points Marina to check on the vessel. However, when he arrived, the boat was nowhere to be found. As he was driving back to his home in Falmouth, Maine, he recognized his sailboat heading north in the vicinity of Great Diamond Island.
He alerted the Coast Guard, who quickly located the boat and arrested Jesse Drinkwater, 43. Police say Drinkwater caused an estimated $25,000 worth of damage and now faces charges of burglary of a motor vehicle and aggravated criminal mischief. The sailboat was towed back to the Fore Point Marina.
