July 18, 2024Vineyard Haven Waterfront Makeover Proposed
A proposed development plan from a nonprofit group called Vineyard Lands for Our Community could significantly reshape a portion of the Vineyard Haven waterfront on Martha’s Vineyard. However, the group must first raise some $6 million for the project to proceed—not to mention clear numerous permitting hurdles.
Called HarborWorks, the project would reshape five parcels along Vineyard Haven Harbor, from the Ernie Boch Jr. Park to the former DeSorcy paint building. The land is currently owned by the DeSorcy family
If it all comes together, the development would improve public access to the beach and harbor, expand the historic Gannon & Benjamin boatbuilding shop, and create studio and gallery space for local artists. A public amphitheater is also being considered as part of the project.
According to the Vineyard Gazette, the closing cost for the land alone is $3.5 million, yet only $1.5 million in verbal donor agreements have been secured.
