A Boston Duck Tours vehicle overturned near the entrance to the Charles River in Cambridge on Saturday, June 27, injuring at least 11 people and prompting an investigation by state and federal authorities.
The incident occurred around 3 p.m. near Education Street while the amphibious vehicle was being towed near the river access ramp. Emergency responders quickly arrived on scene, and all passengers were safely accounted for. Several people were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious.
Following the incident, Boston Duck Tours suspended operations for the remainder of the day while officials began investigating what led to the overturn. The company said it is fully cooperating with the Massachusetts State Police, Cambridge Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard as the investigation continues.
The accident comes as New England enters one of its busiest weeks on the water. From sightseeing vessels and harbor cruises to recreational boaters and paddlers, waterways throughout the region experience a significant increase in traffic during the Fourth of July holiday week. While investigators have not yet determined the cause of the incident, the accident serves as a reminder that launching areas, towing operations and busy waterfront environments require careful planning, communication and attention to safety.
Duck boats have become one of Boston‘s most recognizable attractions, offering visitors a unique tour by both land and water. Saturday’s incident is expected to receive close scrutiny as officials work to determine exactly what caused the vehicle to overturn and whether any additional safety measures may be necessary before the peak holiday boating season continues.
