New England’s Coast Guard crews are no strangers to performing rescues. But they were recently involved in one rescue that was pretty unique, even for them.
Coast Guard members recently helped rescue a young seal that was fighting for its life near Block Island.
Crews from Coast Guard Station Point Judith responded to Block Island with members of Mystic Aquarium’s Rescue Program to help a weanling gray seal that was in critical condition and struggling to breathe.
Due to ferry schedules, it would have taken five hours for the team from Mystic to leave the island with the seal.
The animal rescue team reached out to the Coast Guard, who had crews on the scene within 30 minutes.
Coast Guard crews transported the seal and two members of the animal rescue team back to Mystic Aquarium to rehabilitate the seal.
