Barge Refloated After Emergency Grounding Off Rhode Island Coast
The Coast Guard reported Monday, May 4, 2026, that the barge being towed by the tug Challenger had been successfully refloated near Bonnet Shores, Rhode Island, and was under tow to Quonset for inspection and cargo stabilization.
The incident began Sunday afternoon, May 3, when crews aboard the tug Challenger discovered the barge was taking on water northeast of Point Judith while transporting pilings to Boston for Logan Airport construction work. To prevent the vessel from sinking or obstructing navigation channels, the tug crew intentionally grounded the barge near Bonnet Shores.
Officials said there were no reports of pollution and no obvious structural damage at the time, though a full inspection is planned. Mariners are being urged to avoid the area while submerged pilings and underwater hazards are located and marked by salvage crews and the Coast Guard.
