Best New England Rivers for Kayaking & Canoeing In Spring
New England’s rivers are coming alive this spring as warmer temperatures and higher water levels create ideal conditions for kayaking and canoeing across the region. From quiet wildlife paddles to multi-day wilderness adventures, May and early June are considered some of the best times of the year to explore New England waterways.
Among the most popular destinations is the Connecticut River, where paddlers can travel portions of the 410-mile Connecticut River Paddlers’ Trail stretching from northern New Hampshire to Long Island Sound. The trail features scenic wetlands, primitive campsites, and easy access points ideal for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
In Maine, the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and St. Croix River continue attracting canoeists looking for remote scenery, wildlife viewing, and classic New England canoe camping experiences. Outfitters report strong interest heading into Memorial Day weekend.
The Androscoggin River in northern New Hampshire is also gaining popularity this month, with paddlers often spotting moose, bald eagles, and osprey near the White Mountains.
Southern New England offers excellent spring paddling as well. Rhode Island’s Wood River is known for relaxed kayak trips through wooded scenery, while Connecticut’s Farmington River provides a mix of flatwater paddling and light whitewater sections.
Paddling organizations throughout the region are reminding outdoor enthusiasts to check river conditions, wear properly fitted life jackets, and monitor changing spring weather before launching.
