Coast Guard Rescues Four Sailors South of Block Island
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued four mariners Tuesday, May 12, after their 60-foot sailboat Scotch Mist began taking on water approximately 170 miles south of Block Island, Rhode Island.According to the Coast Guard, the vessel reported flooding caused by a deteriorating shaft seal while operating offshore in rough conditions. An HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Air Station Cape Cod responded first, delivering a dewatering pump and assisting the crew while the Coast Guard Cutter William Chadwick made its way to the scene.
All four sailors were safely rescued and brought aboard the cutter. Officials said the mariners showed signs of shock and hypothermia but suffered no serious injuries.
The rescue highlights the dangers of offshore boating in New England waters during the spring season, when cold-water conditions can quickly turn dangerous even for experienced mariners.
