Rhode Island Offshore Invitational Returns to Newport This Weekend

Some of the Northeast’s top offshore anglers will head to Newport this weekend as the Rhode Island Offshore Invitational returns from July 24–26, bringing together experienced crews for one of the region’s premier big-game fishing tournaments.

Held out of Newport, the invitational is part of the 2026 Sport Fishing Championship (SFC) Atlantic Division schedule. Teams will compete over three days targeting offshore species while earning valuable points toward the championship standings. The event attracts highly skilled captains and crews from across New England and the Mid-Atlantic, making it one of the marquee offshore competitions of the summer.

The Sport Fishing Championship expanded its 2026 calendar with six Atlantic Division events, giving competitive offshore anglers more opportunities to qualify for the league’s season-ending championship. The Rhode Island Offshore Invitational is expected to be one of the most competitive stops, with boats heading offshore in search of tuna and other pelagic species found in Northeast canyon waters during the peak summer season.

While the tournament is invitation-based, it generates plenty of excitement throughout the local boating and fishing community. Marinas, fuel docks, tackle shops, and waterfront businesses in Newport typically see increased activity as crews prepare their boats, stock bait, and make final equipment checks before lines go in.

With favorable summer conditions and offshore fishing heating up across southern New England, competitors will be hoping for productive days on the water and a strong finish that keeps them in contention for the Sport Fishing Championship title.
