For paddlers looking to explore one of New England’s most fascinating coastal waterways, The Trustees’ upcoming CraneOutdoors: Kayak Historic Fox Creek offers a unique opportunity to combine outdoor adventure with maritime history.
Scheduled for August 2, the guided excursion launches from Essex Bay and takes participants through the winding channels of Fox Creek, a tidal waterway that cuts through the Great Marsh, the largest continuous salt marsh ecosystem in New England.
The journey follows the historic Fox Creek Canal, recognized as the oldest saltwater canal in the United States. Along the route, guides share stories of the area’s working waterfront heritage, including Robinson’s Shipyard, where more than 100 wooden minesweepers were built during World War II.
While history is a major draw, the paddle also offers exceptional opportunities to experience the region’s coastal environment. The Great Marsh serves as critical habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, and kayakers frequently encounter herons, egrets, ospreys, and other shorebirds while navigating the quiet tidal creeks.
The approximately three-and-a-half-hour outing is suitable for paddlers of varying experience levels, though participants must be comfortable in and around the water. All kayaks, paddles, and personal flotation devices are provided by The Trustees.
Fox Creek’s narrow channels, expansive marsh views, and rich maritime legacy make it one of the more distinctive paddling destinations in Massachusetts. For kayakers interested in exploring beyond the typical lake or river route, this guided trip offers a chance to experience a waterway where you get both natural history and New England’s seafaring past colliding.
